Exciting news about Wrexham Science Festival 2012!

Planning for this year’s Festival is well underway, and we have loads of fantastic events already lined up. This year the Festival is running throughout the first week of the school summer holidays, so there will be plenty to keep the kids occupied and kick-start the summer holidays with a bang, as well as activities of a more grown-up variety…

Highlights include:

  • Special Olympics themed events, including the return of the Science Junkies with their brand new show uncovering the physiology and sports engineering that make an Olympic and Paralympic athlete a champion
  • From the makers of ‘Amoeba to Zebra’, the world première of new show The Clockwork Universe, exploring the history of science from ancient Greece to Albert Einstein through the power of pop music, lyrics, stunning visuals and, of course, daft costumes
  • Interactive shows and workshops for all the family, looking at the maths behind 3-D surfaces, the science of sound waves and vibrations, field archaeology and much more
  • A whole host of talks and lectures covering everything from the history of the electric car to future of the internet, and lots more in between

Full programme details will be announced in May, but stay tuned for more exclusive updates!

Special Events for Schools

This year’s Primary Schools Programme will take place from Friday 9 March until Friday 16 March, in line with National Science and Engineering Week.

The week-long event will be packed full of presentations, demonstrations and workshops aimed at challenging pupils from across Wrexham, Flintshire and Denbighshire to engage with science –  from investigating healthy eating and learning how our bodies work to discovering how to harness the power of light to design and construct a solar powered fariground ride, and much more. There’ll also be the chance to get up close and personal with Gwawr, the Welsh Solar Car!

The Secondary Schools Programme – a dedicated programme of events for secondary school pupils, designed to suit all knowledge levels and abilities – will run from Monday 11 June until Friday 6 July.

Bloodhound Experience Wrexham

We were delighted to welcome the Bloodhound Super Sonic Car team to Glyndŵr University in Wrexham on Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 November, for an exclusive Wrexham Science Festival spin-off event.

A full-scale prototype of the car, which is being designed to run at speeds of up to 1,050mph and will attempt to break the land speed record in South Africa next year, was available to view in the University's Performance Car Workshop.

A series of educational presentations and workshops were held across the two days for primary and secondary schools, as well as sessions for FE students and for Glyndŵr University’s Performance Car and Motorsport students.

The Bloodhound Project’s director Richard Noble OBE, himself a land speed record holder between 1983 and 1997, gave a public lecture about the project to a packed out William Aston Hall on Wednesday evening.

A special event for businesses was held on Thursday morning, and featured a presentation by Rocket Scientist Daniel Jubb, whose hybrid rockets, designed especially for the Bloodhound car, are being manufactured here in Wrexham.

Thanks so much to our partners, sponsors and supporters, in particular Glyndŵr University, Techniquest Glyndŵr, Glyndŵr Innovations, Yale College, Barloworld Handling Ltd. and the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
