Entertainment that doesn’t cost a penny
17 March 2009The Wrexham Science Festival starts next week and is once again filled with talks on a variety of science topics.
Visitors to the Festival will get the chance to learn how they can live in a more environmentally friendly way at the first event on Thursday 26 March through a talk by TV celebrity Philippa Forrester.
A speed networking event with a science twist is one of the more unusual events on offer at the annual science extravanganza. Caroline Pollitt, of Corwen-based SCIntillate Education Services, will lead the session ‘The Big Questions – Speed Networking Event’, which invites people to discuss anything from medicines to aeroplanes and climate change to chemistry.
On Monday 30 March the topic of Animal Welfare will be discussed by Glyndŵr University lecturer Tamsin Young. Over the years Tamsin has undertaken a great deal of research into this area, and through this talk she will explore how can we assess welfare and recognise welfare problems using examples from domestic, farm and zoo animals. This talk will take place at the Welsh College of Horticulture, Northop at 2.00pm.
Also on that day there will be a chance to take a journey through 4,000 years of science. Patricia Fara has recently written a book entitled Science: A Four Thousand Year History and in this talk she will go through some of the issues she has faced when trying to condense that length and depth of science into just 400 pages - a problem that has been baffling historians for over 20 years in deciding when science began and how it has changed. Patricia has some unexpected and fascinating answers to these problems. This talk is at 7.00pm at Glyndŵr University.
Paranormal activity in Cheshire is the focus of another talk on Thursday 2 April. Dave Sadler, from the Unknown Phenomena Investigation Association, will investigate paranormal Cheshire and sleep disorders in relation to the paranormal from 7.00pm, also on Glyndŵr University’s Plas Coch site in Wrexham.
Wrexham Science Festival organiser Corrina Jeffreys, events coordinator at Glyndŵr University, said: “There’s something for everyone at this year’s festival, from astronomy and chemistry to wildlife and nature. The free events provide a great way to have a good night out and learn something new at no cost. A great way of entertaining the family without having to spend any money!”
