Polar bears to visit Wrexham Science Festival
18 November 2008Giant polar bears will be offering an amazing insight into life in the Arctic at Wrexham Science Festival 2009.
Creature animatronics act Los Kaos are bringing Bjorn and Nanuk the Polar Bears to Scientriffic on Saturday 4 April.
Families will be treated to a magical experience as the giant life-size puppets perform in a specially built inflatable ice environment.
The show has already been performed at Cambridge Science Week and the BT Young Scientist of the Year event, and Corrina Jeffreys, organiser of the festival, said it promises to be a huge hit in Wrexham as well.
“Every year we endeavour to put on a wide range of science-related events for the community, and the polar bears will offer something a little different for audiences,” she said.
“We’ve had snakes, owls and spiders at the festival over the years but never anything quite like polar bears, so I’m really looking forward to it.”
The show will explain why polar bears are Capricorns, the meaning of the word Arctic and the effect of global warming on polar bears. Handlers Ursula and Arthur will distribute facts and chat with the audience.
Los Kaos’s polar bears are operated by a skilled performer, complete with facial animations and live sounds.
Their previous performances also include appearances at Glastonbury Festival and the movie premieres of The Golden Compass and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Wrexham Science Festival 2009 takes place from Thursday 26 March to Saturday 4 April.
The festival will again feature a diverse range of science talks and demonstrations, culminating with the family fun day Scientriffic on 4 April.
In support of the International Year of Astronomy 2009, an astronomy theme will also run through the festival, with a series of talks on astronomy based subjects planned.
