Wrexham Science Festival 2009

Wrexham Science Festival 2009

The 2009 Wrexham Science Festival was held from 26 March until 4 April 2009. The Festival featured an eight-day programme of public lectures and presentations delving into the science of streetlights, sea levels, lasers and much more.

The Festival was launched by TV celebrity Philippa Forrester, the former host of BBC show Tomorrow’s World, with a thought-provoking talk entitled A Greener Tomorrow: The Importance of Looking After Our Environment.

Visitors learnt about the Science of the Singing Voice and discovered just who else we share the earth with at the Paranormal Cheshire talk.

We took a step back in time and discovered where science started, with renowned author Patricia Fara as she guided us through 4000 years of science.

2009 was the International Year of Astronomy, and this was marked with a series of astronomy-themed events to whet any stargazer's appetite. Kicking off the talks was Guy Hurst, Editor of The Astronomer Online, with Fostering Professional-Amateur Cooperation. The talk provided an introduction to astronomy and explained ways in which we can all enjoy what the night sky has to offer. Other astronomy talks included Mars Fact or Fiction and The Sun, Moon and Earth Show.

Astronomy was also selected as the theme for 2009’s competition, with people of all ages asked to write a poem, comic strip or short story under the title of ‘What’s In Space? A Journey Beyond Earth’. The competition attracted 125 entries from all over the world and the standard of entries received was excellent.
